If you live in a neighborhood with an HOA, it's smart to check the rules before your lights go up. Most HOAs allow holiday lighting, but some have guidelines worth knowing about.

What HOA rules often cover

• Timing. When lights can go up and when they need to come down.
• Hours. Whether lights need to be off by a certain time at night.

Look in your HOA's CC&Rs or architectural guidelines, often on the HOA website or community portal. If it's unclear, a quick email to the management company usually gets an answer.
